I was astounded last night... I put X4.3 and the nvidia drivers up on my box at home (Athlon XP 1600+, GeForce2 Ti). glxgears ~ 2600 fps. Quake3 in 1024x800 full detail "four" demo ~ 150fps. The big trick to getting all this to work (that I've not seen anywhere else): Make sure your X session is running with depth >= 16!!!! Mine was defaulting to 8-bit (hey, I still use TVTWM!), and GLX would simply not initialise.
