Sorry, when I posted comment 16 I was thinking we picked a solution that allowed both numpy1 and 2 to exist together - as in option (b) in comment 14. Obviously, that is not the case, so that makes it effectively impossible to just update ports gradually over time - leaving only the "do it all at once" option. I may try to implement comment 14 option (b) despite comment 16 asserting otherwise.
