Generally I'd suggest you try use ports/packages as often as possible.
It masks most of these application issues.

If you must try something else, get the Linux version, install the
linux_base port/package, make sure you have linux_enable="YES" in
/etc/rc.conf, and try run it.  It should work with Linux compatibility.
