Apparently so.  If you tried killing them while they were actually in use,
they may have respawned, but killing them when they are not in use will 
cause them to no longer run.  Though it is not apparent to you yet, it
maybe be configurable to have no nfsiod run at boot.  Keep reading the
man pages.
