I am trying to install FreeBSD 4.4 on a ThinkPad 560X, using FTP via a 3Com Etherlink III (3C589). The device configures and works both on Windows (yuck) and a previous installation of FreeBSD 4.0 that I want to wipe out. My problem is that during the device configuration step I can't find the ep driver. 4.0 finds the card as ep0: <3Com Etherlink III 3C589> at port 0x240-24f irq 10 slot 0 on pccard0 Windows maps it as 0110-011F, IRQ 11 3Com's 3LINK-ID program says 3C589C IRQ 10 I/O Base 300 "optimized for OS/2 client" "max modem speed 9600" (huh?) ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/pub/FreeBSD/releases/i386/4.4-RELEASE/HARDWARE.TXT says that the 3C589 is supported by the ep driver. But when I boot up the installation floppies, and enter UserConfig, the only "Active" network devices are cs0, ed0, fe0, ie0, lnc0, and sn0. If I tab over to the Inactive side, there are no network devices listed. If I try again in CLI mode instead of visual mode, typing "enable ep0" yields "No such device: ep0", which agrees with the output of "ls". http://www.freebsd.org/relnotes/4-STABLE/hardware/i386/x1755.html says "A compressed version of the GENERIC kernel is also used on the installation floppy diskette and DOS boot image". Is it possible that this "compression" includes removing the ep driver? I browsed around freebsd.org for a while but was unable to find which config file matches the 4.4 install floppies (I saw "BOOTMFS" blink by, but it's not clear how to see a copy before installing FreeBSD and setting up cvsup--I would have expected to find it in http://www.freebsd.org/cgi/cvsweb.cgi/src/sys/i386/conf/). Suggestions? Dave Eckhardt P.S.
