Some machines assign the serial port to a non-default x86 I/O port. I suggest
check whether your machine is the case. On a booted system, you can use a shell
command like 'ls -l /dev/ttyu*' to list probed serial consoles.

For example on (most?) Dell PowerEdge systems, the virtual serial port is
ttyu0, and the physical serial port is ttyu1.
