Well, the machine is now building the world with soft updates enabled
again.  Someone wrote to me directly and said "do you have your fs
also mounted async?  This kills me every time!" I did indeed have
async turned on in my /etc/fstab and so I turned it off and things
have been going much more nicely on that box now! :)
