Am I right in thinking that for this, and things like it (gallery, and 
so on) the file in the root directory (docproj.sgml) will move to a file
called 'index.sgml' in the subdirectory?

Not sure. 'alpha' (and the Sparc port) are certainly a part of FreeBSD,
with their code in the core CVS repository, I wouldn't like people to 
get the impression that they're just projects.

'docproj' possibly, although again, I'm not sure there's a particularly
compelling reason. 

On a related note, do you see the website as a part of the FreeBSD 
Documentation Project? I ask because you sent this to the doc@ mailing
list and not the freebsd-www list.
