But chess books are copyrightable. If chess players didn't get paid
hefty sums of money for making appearances, they'd all be writing 
chess books to make a living - except for the few, who play for the
fun of it.

Whatever -ism is being practiced, one needs to have a framework in
which people get compensated for their work. I don't think Stallman's
"support economy" can support all the programmers out there.
