I'm really glad somebody else noticed this - I've had this problem
with my on-board Vibra16X sound (on a Tyan Thunder 100 x86
motherboard, not an Alpha system) for many months now but didn't want
to submit a bug report as irreproducible as "sometimes it sprays
static."  Now I can just submit an <aol>Me too!</aol>. :-)
