Tom,

The file '[' is a program otherwise known as test, do 'man test' or 
'man [' to find out more, 'man test or [' should display the same 
manual entry.

For several shells ,bash, I belive it is a builtin command also.

The reason for /stand has be detailed else where so I won't reiterate 
it here.
