Recent versions of FreeBSD require 12MB of RAM to install, although, once installed, it is supposed to run with 8MB. I recently installed FreeBSD 4.2 on a 486DX/33 which originally had only 8MB of RAM. I found memory online at a computer surplus outlet and was able to upgrade to 16MB for a grand total of $4.00 (+ $8.00 for shipping) so if cost is your issue maybe you could go that route.
