In the man page for ls, the section on "-G" reads:

-G      Enable colorized output.  This option is equivalent to defining
             CLICOLOR in the environment.  (See below.)  This functionality
             can be compiled out by removing the definition of COLORLS.

COLORLS should be LSCOLORS
