If the 1742A is willing to "negotiate" an "ultra" transfer rate (i.e. any xfer period below 100 ns), then it is violating the SCSI-2 standard (to which this product was probably advertised as adhering). I would call it broken and demand new 1742A firmware. Unfortunately, this product is no longer manufactured and you probably don't have much clout with Adaptec. I don't know if pleading will help.
