You might want to create a partition and mount it on /tmp.  mail.local stores
temporary files there, and as someone has mentioned, a large message could
cause problems.  If a new partition isn't possible, you might want to create a
/usr/tmp directory, and have /tmp as a symbolic link to it.  Its always a good
idea to have /tmp as its own partition though.  If you are running out of 
inodes, you should see a warning about that as well.
