Apologies for the delay; we have been pursuing a number of technical issues relating to the recent root filesystem mount changes. After taking into consideration the numerous submissions on the topic, the changes stay. That is, the changes relating to the device from which the root filesystem is mounted will _not_ be backed out from -stable. They will be present in the 2.2.6-RELEASE version. The following outstanding issues are worthy of some discussion, as they may affect some users updating from systems predating these changes: - The misleading "changing root filesystem" message has been corrected, as per -current. - Users with _truly_ dedicated SCSI disks (those prepared with "disklabel -auto") should check to ensure that the disk type in their disk label is set correctly. If this is incorrect, boot failure _will_ occur. It is not harmful to change this field on other disks. Determine the disk type by executing "disklabel sdX" where X is the unit number of your boot disk. The 'type:' field is the second line output. This should be 'SCSI' for SCSI disks, and 'ESDI' for IDE disks. If the value is incorrect, it can be edited by executing "disklabel -re sdX". - If the entry for / in /etc/fstab is not updated, and the root filesystem is not unmounted cleanly, fsck can't locate the correct device to clean. This requires the user to clean the correct device manually, and then reboot. There is no working heuristic to get this right without potentially damaging the system. -- \\ Sometimes you're ahead, \\ Mike Smith \\ sometimes you're behind. \\ mike@smith.net.au \\ The race is long, and in the \\ msmith@freebsd.org \\ end it's only with yourself. \\ msmith@cdrom.com To Unsubscribe: send mail to majordomo@FreeBSD.org with "unsubscribe freebsd-stable" in the body of the message
