I have a WinXP Pro machine running VMWare 4.5.1 with a FreeBSD 4.9
virtual machine and it works just fine. lnc0 works exactly as expected.

Do have something similar to this in /etc/rc.conf?

network_interfaces="lo0 lnc0"
ifconfig_lnc0="DHCP"
