The Debian system is pretty hard to beat in just about all areas. Their apt-get facility with the commands "update" and "dist-upgrade" automatically resolves dependencies, downloads the packages and installs them (with pre/post config script) in one swoop. It's DB driven, so you can do stuff like query what file a package belongs to, etc... The package quality is very good and well maintained.
