GCC 3.2 is well-known to generate bad code on some platforms, or to fail, with "internal compiler error" messages, when -march is used. That is why it's off by default. As Giorgos points out, there are knobs to turn it back on; if you do, however, it is at your own risk, since there are known to be problems.
