I played with mount -o union and was happy and disappointed at the same time.
it does do the trick of overlaying a FS ontop of another.  the catch is only
for the root directory of the fs you overlayed.  all children directories
are part of the bottom file system.. so it doesn't work for overlaying memfs
ontop of say a static /var
