Is the slot on Multia really cardbus (32bit)0?
I doubt that the slot on Multias is a cardbus (32bit) slot - they are
to old for that.
pcmcia (16bit) support for i386 exits since years, but I don't know how
it is on alpha - even on i386 there were troubles with additional
pcmcia bridges.

Even if cardbus runs - handling 16bit cards is still a different story.
