Miller (dm@engr.sgi.com) Linux: Technical Leader Today / World Domination Tomorrow Today, Linux is the most performance driven free operating system project. Numerous studies have proven that Linux clearly outperforms every commercial operating system on every piece of hardware it has been ported to. This trend will continue. If just the right things happen, and the right people support this already thriving effort, Linux will obtain it's long standing goal "world domination tomorrow". Without help, Linux will reach this goal anyways, just not as quickly. This talk will hit upon certain specific examples of Linux's ability to outperform commercial operating systems. It will also mention where it does not do so well and what is being done to aleviate these problems. Finally, the path to Linux's ultimate success will be touched upon. Engineering Talks are held on Fridays at 3pm in the main conference room. They provide a communication forum for the Cygnus engineering community. Different talks will appeal to different audiences. Topics will include Cygnus internal projects and issues, happenings in the broader computer industry, and tutorial level presentations. Most, but not all talks will have a technical focus. The talks are open to all Cygnus employees. Suggestions for future topics and volunteers to speak are most welcome. Email: gordoni@cygnus.com.
