Just to be clear, the FreeBSD 14.1-RELEASE was not upgraded from FreeBSD
13.1-RELEASE.  It was a fresh install.  I'm also able to reproduce the issue
with a mostly default installation without any extraneous customizations of=
 my
own.

It could be related to recent ncurses changes.  How would you go about
debugging that?  I only set ~/.termcap in my user account, and I find it ve=
ry
unlikely that changing the default root shell would affect that.
