You misunderstand Jordan's point.  May I humbly suggest that you find
an Irix weenie that knows their way around the system, and ask them to
explain the inner workings of 'inst'.

Then come back to the discussion with some new ideas.  I emphasise the
"knows" criteria above; said Irix weenie will need to be able to
explain how interdependancy and death-hug mutual dependancy is
handled, and preferably have built products using it.  'inst's user
interface sucks; don't spend any time worrying about that; focus on
the basic concepts.
