I have another more drastic workaround that works. In /boot/device.hints I
placed the following lines:

hint.ahcich.0.sata_rev=3D2
hint.ahcich.1.sata_rev=3D2
hint.ahcich.2.sata_rev=3D2
...etc...

This slows down the SATA bus which isn't desirable either, but better than
timeouts and controller drops.
