Is this different from the `status: active' that ifconfig currently
reports based on the ifm_status field of the structure filled by the
SIOCGIFMEDIA ioctl?  That's what I currently use to decide whether to
run DHCP on my laptop's interface.

I don't know where that ioctl is documented.
