It seems > to be breaking earlier and ealier. Sorry for the delay in answering - it took me a little while to blow my source tree away and check out a fresh copy. It looks like Mark inadvertently abused CLEANFILES - just the "clean" target was broken, and he probably only tested the build and install targets.
