It's neither a bug, nor it is telnet(1)-specific. It is happening because your terminal key '^\' is bound to a special QUIT character. Try `stty quit undef' or `stty -isig' before the telnet(1) session. Refer to the stty(1), termios(4) and signal(3) manpages for details.
