The vm-design article site seems to have broken links, but my local
version has four image files (fig{1,2,3,4}.gif) with zero length.
The main need for fixing this is to avoid further work by others in
investigation of the problem, PR, etc.

2) Find missing images.
3) Recreate (or create) the images.
4) Reword the article to avoid need for images.
