I ran it before buildworld for 4.6 and (just now) for 4.7 (while still in XFree86), without noticing any ill effect. I also did the "cd /usr/src/usr.sbin/mergemaster; make all install" thing first, but I'm guessing that it is only occasionally needed. I see no reason why the two kernel steps shouldn't be combined into one "make kernel" step. If someone wants to make this Upgrade Sequence more detailed (eg, fsck+mount+swapon after reboot), I have detailed notes which I've used several times; just ask.
