That was my first thought, but I've never had that problem before.

I have never seen a BIOS that wouldn't.  (That doesn't mean your BIOS will
work, of course.  :) )  Swap a VGA card in and see if you can get to
setup.  Most old BIOSes go through POST in co80 or mono mode based on a
hardware jumper.  (If it is REALLY old, it might have a jumper.  :) )
