I submitted a PR (bin/14342) which adds a lot of speed to mismatches in Henry Spencer's regex code. Who knows a lot about regex whom I can bug? Also, grep has gone through a lot of changes since the last time it was talked about on this list. The current version can be found in the ports collection under textproc/freegrep. It is still slower than GNU, but not as bad as it was. If people'd be willing to look at it again and offer any speed ups, that would be great.
