Use the ports, Luke...  :)

cd /usr/ports/x11/XFree86
make
pkg_delete -f XFree86-3.3.6_0
make install

then run xf86config(or XF86Setup) unless you've got a good XF86Config
already.  compiling this sucker takes a while though, so be prepared
to wait...
