Hello, We are considering getting a number of small notebook or palmtop computers, equipped with some sort of UNIX for our scientists and students. Obviously, we have looked at FreeBSD and Linux (which we have also tried). What we need is some kind of comparison between the free Unix releases on the PC, between the free and commercial Unix versions (SCO, Solaris,...) on the PC, and a comparison between the free Unix versions on the PC and the best Unix versions on workstations and servers (AIX, DEC Unix, HP-UX, Irix, Solaris,...). We are particularly interested in a comparison of the features of the OS's themselves (kernel, libraries) rather than things like Gnu applications. Things like UNIX 95/Xopen standards conformance is a very critical factor. If you have any pointers to where we could find such comparisons we would appreciate it very much if you could take the time and e-mail them to us.
