I think there's a bug in XFree86 where it complains that /dev/vga is missing, but it means /dev/io is missing. Mark recently modified the kernel so that you need a "device io" in order to get /dev/io, so you probably need to tweak your kernel configuration to reflect recent changes to GENERIC.
