4os2/4dos/etc inherit heavily from bash/tcsh.  Either of these shells
are, in most regards, vastly superior due at least in part to the
environment.

Here is my prompt (for tcsh), nothing fancy :

set prompt=`hostname -s`:%~\>

Check the tcsh manpages for other neat % expansions; there's sure to be
one that suits you.
