You'll find it in the writing style section of the FDP-Primer:

One reason given there, is that it is easier to recognize
the end of sentences in tools, although I never searched for
the end of sentences :)  What it really does, is enhancing
the readability of the SGML source, which is very useful
when translating the document.

Maybe we could lower the bar by not making this a requirement
for contributions, but I would like to have two spaces
in the committed document.
