Looks like the partitions weren’t aligned! As to whether they ought to be aligned by default, this box is on a slightly older version: 10.0-RELEASE-p7 FreeBSD 10.0-RELEASE-p7 #0: Tue Jul 8 06:37:44 UTC 2014 so perhaps that’s been fixed since.
