Interesting question. On our Pyramid systems, the tool that installs a partitioning table into the PDF of a SCSI device is called "dkpart". It has an option that can load the partition table into the running kernel without touching the drive, specifically for read-only devices like CD-ROMs and Magneto Optical devices.
