I've had a lot of trouble with fetch lately (3.4-STABLE). I keep getting 'Empty response from server...' (from memory) and other error messages. However, the -b option appears to fix almost all these issues. This has only really started happening in the last couple of weeks/months of watching stable as far as I can tell.
