I have found the root cause of this. The NFS attribute cache is cleared every time a file is opened (in nfs_open, right at the end). Getting rid of this drastically reduces the number of NFS ops per second in this test. I will take this up on freebsd-fs and/or freebsd-net... Cheers, Brian.
