I am attempting to install FreeBSD 4.5 from CDROM, after having prepared the kern.flp and msfroot.flp floppies.
The drive is a Toshiba XM5702B 12x CD-ROM, attached to the secondary IDE port. Is this a supported CD-ROM?
The processor is a Pentium 486-DX4 running at 100Mhz.
The BIOS reports 16Mb of RAM.
This will be a dedicated BSD box -- no other OS's.
My installation of FreeBSD 4.5 proceeds to the point of copying the contents of /bin to the root file system. The message:
Extracting bin into / directory. . .
appears in a Progress window. At the bottom of the screen, a message states that:
1024 bytes read from bin dist, chunk 1 of 143 @ 1.0 KBytes/sec.
I have restarted many, many times. (On one occasion, the previous message suggested that the read progressed to chunk 2. Prior to the installation's attempted copy of the file system, distributions, etc., the kernal configuration reported that
All filesystem information (was) written successfully;
however, the message:
starting emergency holographic shell on VTY4
. . .appears. What is the significance of the so-called emergency holographic shell? How should I use it? At the point that the extract stops, the system is locked-up. Nothing seems to respond. My only recourse is to reboot and start over.
Suggestions?
Thanks,
Ron W.
