It's caused either by 1) not installing DES if the old setup was using DES 2) installing DES when the old setup was not.. What I did was reboot to single user mode, reset the root password, goto multiuser, and fetch the DES distribution (either with /stand/sysinstall or by hand). That solved it, I reset the root password AGAIN, and it works great now. Hope this helps. Alex G.
