<sigh>  I'm a writer, I should have caught this.  How about:

The canonical way to define the hostname at boot time is with the
.Va hostname
variable in
.Pa /etc/rc.conf .

Better?

There's enough bad English in documentation, I didn't mean to bugger up
by adding more.  New diff (with a better path specification) coming up.

FWIW, we don't use words ending in -ly; my writing teacher would thrash
me.
