If that helps. I succesfully use buildkernel on STABLE all the time, no trouble there. I think the error occurs when "builkernel" is almost finished and maybe "installkernel" is invoked to early? I can't check for the time being as I'm away from the machine for some time... -- \usepackage[latin1]{inputenc}!
