I noticed that unlike my 1.2.2 installation, which has a bin/i386/green_threads/ subdir, there's only a bin/i386/native_threads/, and so I'm not sure -classic will actually have an effect. Specifically, I'm trying to get it to work with Tomcat. I can go into details if there's not something obvious I'm missing.
