"Although there may be a very small occurrence when spammers actually do subscribe, there is a much much higher percentage of spam that could be stopped by requiring list membership for posting. I haven't heard of any, but I'm sure there are cases where spammers do sign up. I have seen hundreds of spam messages that could have been prevented with proper controls.
