<MeToo>It ate a PCMCIA modem card in my laptop as well.  The card was
working perfectly until I installed 4.9-PRERELEASE and now it just
hangs on boot :-(.

I've also got a PCI multi-port serial card that stops the PSU turning
on.  That was working perfectly until I installed 4.9 - but I suspect
something external killed it.
