I've been using DVD-RAMs for about 6 months. My drive is a Panasonic
LF-D311, which is ATAPI. I newfs DVD-RAMs and mount them like normal
UFS filesystems. I use this newfs command line:

  $ newfs -f 2048 -b 16384 -S 2048 /dev/racd1a

I found that the fragment, block, and sector sizes were all important.
I got lots of errors when I tried other combinations than this.

I've also been able to burn DVD-Rs recently, using atapicam(4) and
cdrecord-ProDVD. [1]

All this is under 4.7-STABLE, although I think CURRENT should work too.
