When installing our server, I have the opportunities of using either standard encrypted passwords or DES, depending on the libraries which perform this task. Using DES, I have a limitation of 8 characters per password, using standard encryption I get 128 characters. Can anybody tell me what the reasons are to use DES instaed of MD5? Is the encrypting related library used by other services? Isn't DES being compromised by brute force mechanisms? How secure is it? Thanks in advance, Gruss O.
